This month: Manatee Lagoon and Florida Atlantic University Schmidt College of Science present a joint lecture as part of the 2019 Frontiers in Science Lecture Series. Dr. Stephen Kajiura is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Florida Atlantic University. His area of expertise is the sensory biology of sharks and rays with an emphasis on the electrosensory system. He has worked extensively on the evolution of the hammerhead shark cephalofoil. In addition to his sensory physiology research, Dr. Kajiura studies the massive seasonal aggregation of blacktip sharks in southeast Florida. Blacktip sharks aggregate by the thousands in nearshore waters of southeast Florida every winter. Recently, sharks have been found in lower numbers than usual. Where have all the blacktips gone? These sharks have been shifting their distribution to higher latitudes in response to warming oceans. In the future, southeast Florida might actually be deprived of these seasonally important predators.
